OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/28/2022, 50-year-old Jerome Bernard Mouzone died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after Florence Police Department officers responded to Sedgefield Apartments on Valparaiso Drive and police surrounded an apartment where Mouzone had barricaded himself. Police said Mouzone had just shot and killed 47-year-old Tamika McGray. The incident developed into a barricade involving the Florence Police Department Emergency Response Team and the Florence County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team.
Police were called to the apartment complex at approximately 7 p.m. after McGray was shot. Officers found her suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, and she died at the scene. As police investigated, they identified Mouzone as the person they believed had shot her.
Mouzone went into a nearby apartment and barricaded himself as police established a perimeter. Florence police brought in their Emergency Response Team, while the Florence County Sheriff’s Office deployed its SWAT Team to assist. The available reporting does not establish that police fired any shots during the standoff.
Police eventually entered the apartment and found Mouzone dead from what authorities determined was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken subsequently identified both people and authorities classified the deaths as a murder-suicide, concluding that Mouzone intentionally shot McGray before killing himself.
The later identification corrected an important gap in the first reports, which had initially described both people without releasing their names. McGray was 47 and from Florence; Mouzone was 50 and also from Florence.
The date also warrants care in the database. The shooting and barricade occurred on Sunday, 08/28/2022. News reports published on August 29 described the incident as having occurred the previous evening, and the coroner released the identities on August 30.
I found no later public record materially expanding the case beyond the murder-suicide determination: no subsequent civil lawsuit, body-camera release, investigative report, or public account establishing a different sequence of events. The publicly available record also does not identify the individual Florence officers or Florence County deputies who participated in the barricade response.
