On 09/03/2022, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop near East Flamingo Road and South University Center Drive, close to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus. During the stop, a man exited the vehicle and ran. Police pursued him on foot. Gunfire was exchanged between officers and the man. An officer was struck and transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Gabriel Herrera Charles was shot during the encounter and transported to a hospital, where he later died from a gunshot wound to the torso. The Clark County Coroner’s Office identified him as the deceased.
