OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 09/14/2022, Charlottesville Police Department officers located Robert Damon Hughes Jr., 43, in the parking lot of the Albemarle Square Shopping Center on the 400 block of Preston Avenue. Officers were attempting to serve outstanding warrants and approached his vehicle. As officers moved in to make contact, Hughes produced a handgun and shot himself. Officers requested emergency medical assistance immediately. Hughes was transported to a hospital, where he later died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities reported that officers did not discharge their firearms during the encounter. His identity and age were later confirmed through obituary reporting.
