OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 10/30/2022, Santa Maria Police Department officers encountered Salvador Qual Maceda during an investigation in the 1000 block of West Morrison Avenue. Maceda was armed with knives and refused repeated commands to drop them. Officers attempted less-lethal force, including beanbag rounds and pepper balls, during an extended standoff. Maceda threw objects and attempted to break into an apartment occupied by a woman and her young child. When he advanced on officers while armed, Officer Erik Hesch fired a single fatal shot, killing Maceda. The incident was investigated by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office and subsequently reviewed by the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office, which later ruled the use of deadly force justified.
