On 11/14/2022, deputies in Lewis County attempted to stop a stolen vehicle occupied by two men. The driver continued driving and deputies chased the vehicle north into Thurston County. The pursuit ended near Violet Prairie Road and Old Highway 99 SE near Tenino. During the encounter, gunfire was exchanged between one of the vehicle’s occupants and law enforcement. Officers fired their weapons and struck 21-year-old Phymor Tenry of Gresham, Oregon. Tenry died from multiple gunshot wounds. A second occupant of the vehicle was injured and transported for treatment. A bystander was also struck by gunfire and treated for injuries. The Washington State Patrol led the independent investigation into the shooting.
