On 12/02/2022, West Virginia State Police located a vehicle connected to a Louisiana homicide and child abduction investigation traveling on Interstate 77 near Exit 20 in Mercer County. Troopers conducted a stop near US-19 at Camp Creek. As officers approached, Napoleon Crane exited the vehicle and fired at law enforcement. A trooper opened fire and struck Crane. He died from multiple gunshot wounds. A six-month-old child who had been inside the vehicle was located unharmed. Louisiana authorities had identified Crane in connection with the fatal shooting of a woman in Baton Rouge prior to the interstate stop.
