OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 12/12/2022, an inmate identified as 34-year-old Chad Williams of Berwick was inside the St. Mary Parish Courthouse in Franklin when he became involved in a struggle with a corrections deputy from the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office. During the struggle, Williams gained control of the deputy’s handgun. Williams sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead from the self-inflicted injury. Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations detectives were called in to investigate the incident, which occurred inside the courthouse during the contact with a corrections deputy.
