On 09/11/2023, Lafayette Police responded to a domestic violence shooting at Brook Pointe Apartments on N Pierce St where Norvel Etienne shot and critically wounded his ex girlfriend, Deangela Celestine. After the shooting, Etienne fled, prompting a police pursuit that continued onto Interstate 49 toward the Bunkie exit. During the active law enforcement pursuit and containment efforts, Etienne shot himself. He died from a self inflicted gunshot wound. Reporting described the incident as an attempted murder suicide involving one firearm.
