On 08/29/2023, Newark police officers responded to West Side Park at 600 South 17th Street after reports of an armed man. Officers encountered the man near the park, with initial reporting also referencing the area of 18th Avenue and South 13th Street. Police fired their weapons during the confrontation. Investigators later determined the man shot himself in the head during the encounter. He died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities reported one firearm was involved. Officials did not release the man’s name. The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is investigating the incident.
