OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/03/2023, North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Jeffrey Dunlap conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 26 near the Brevard Road exit at mile marker 33 in Asheville. During the stop, 57-year-old Wesley Taylor shot Trooper Dunlap. Dunlap returned fire, striking Taylor. Taylor died from gunshot wounds. Trooper Dunlap survived and was transported for medical treatment. The State Medical Examiner later reported that alcohol was present in Taylor’s system. Authorities closed portions of I-26 for several hours while investigators processed the area.
