On 07/03/2023, Alameda County Sheriff’s deputies pursued a stolen vehicle through San Leandro and into the unincorporated Ashland area near 163rd Avenue and Maubert Avenue. The pursuit ended after the vehicle stopped and deputies confronted three occupants. During the encounter, deputies reported that one man attempted to take a deputy’s firearm. Deputies opened fire and struck him. He died from gunshot wounds. Authorities detained the other two individuals. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office investigated the shooting.
