On 06/28/2023, Alaska State Troopers and Fairbanks police responded to the 900 block of W 29th Place in Ester after reports of a man armed with multiple firearms inside a residence. Officers established a perimeter and attempted to negotiate with 54-year-old Matthew Heller during a barricade situation. Authorities reported that Heller pointed a gun toward officers during the confrontation. Officers opened fire and struck him. Heller died from gunshot wounds. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation reviewed the shooting.
