OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 11/28/2023, a Columbus County deputy went to a residence in Fair Bluff to serve an arrest order on 53 year old Tony Tant. Authorities reported that as the deputy attempted to make contact, Tant produced a handgun and shot himself. Deputies secured the residence and Tant was pronounced dead from the self inflicted gunshot wound. The sheriff’s office confirmed the death occurred during service of the warrant and was not caused by deputy gunfire. The incident was reviewed in accordance with officer involved protocols.
