OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 11/13/2023, officers responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence in the 4300 block of Bundy Road in Coloma Township. Police encountered David Simmons Jr. inside the home, where an exchange of gunfire occurred between Simmons and responding officers. A Coloma Township police officer, Drew Wagner, was shot and injured during the incident and transported to the hospital in stable condition. Officers opened fire during the confrontation and struck Simmons. He was pronounced dead following the shooting. The Berrien County Prosecutor later reviewed the incident and ruled the officers’ use of force justified based on the circumstances described in the investigation.
