On 06/29/2023, Teresa Jeffries was shot and killed while sitting in her vehicle in front of Shady Spring Elementary School at 600 Flat Top Road in Raleigh County. Authorities identified John Carpenter as the man who shot her. After the shooting, Carpenter drove to his home in Beckley. Raleigh County deputies and West Virginia State Police confronted him there.
