On 04/13/2023, Hampton County deputies attempted to stop a man in the Varnville area. The man drove away, and deputies escalated a vehicle chase that moved along U.S. 601 toward U.S. 678 before entering the town limits of Varnville. Deputies reported that the man fired a gun during the pursuit. Deputies exchanged gunfire with him near Pepper Street and Elm Street. The pursuit ended when the man shot himself in the head. Deputies found him dead inside the vehicle.
