OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 09/30/2023, law enforcement responded to a shooting incident at the Sangamon County Juvenile Center on S Dirksen Pkwy in Springfield. Camren Darden, a 17 year old, had a gun inside the facility and a confrontation developed that escalated into a standoff situation. During the incident, another person was shot and injured. Officers confronted Darden inside the detention facility and opened fire, striking him. He died from gunshot wounds. Body camera footage was later released documenting the encounter and police response inside the juvenile center.
