OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 10/18/2025, officers with the Oakland Police Department responded after family members requested assistance for Doug Martin during a mental health crisis. According to police, Martin entered a neighboring residence, where officers located him and attempted to take him into custody. Police reported that a struggle occurred during the arrest and that Martin became unresponsive. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. On 06/24/2026, Martin's parents filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit alleging that officers restrained him face down while pressing on his back, causing restraint asphyxia, and that delayed emergency medical care contributed to his death. The lawsuit also alleges that paramedics took more than 15 minutes to respond and failed to provide timely care. The official cause of death has not yet been released, and the investigation remains ongoing.
