OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/23/2022, shortly after 2:30 a.m., a Missouri City Police Department officer located a vehicle that had been reported stolen during an aggravated robbery at a Texaco station near Fondren Road and Main Street in southwest Houston. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but it continued driving away while police pursued it into the Missouri City area. The pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed into the front yard of a residence near Corsair Road and Maywood Drive. A juvenile passenger remained in the vehicle while Jeffrey Bundrent Jr. ran from the scene on foot.
Missouri City Police Officer Crystal Sepulveda pursued Bundrent into the backyard of a residence in the 15500 block of Corsair Road. According to investigators, Bundrent fired multiple rounds, striking Sepulveda in the face and foot. Despite her injuries, she was able to retreat and was transported to a hospital, where she survived. Officers from multiple agencies established a perimeter and searched the neighborhood.
Houston Police officers J. Rodgers and M. Duron, a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper identified publicly only as Hamid, and a Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office deputy located Bundrent in the backyard of a residence in the 15500 block of Winter Briar Drive. According to investigators, Bundrent again fired at officers as they entered the yard. The officers returned fire, striking him multiple times. Officers rendered first aid before he was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Harris County medical examiner determined he died from multiple gunshot wounds to the neck, torso, arms, and legs.
The Houston Police Department Special Investigations Unit, Internal Affairs Division, and the Fort Bend County District Attorney's Office investigated the shooting. Houston Police publicly identified Officers J. Rodgers and M. Duron two days after the incident. Missouri City Officer Crystal Sepulveda was identified because she had been wounded during the pursuit. I found no public identification of the Fort Bend County deputy involved, no publicly reported criminal charges against the officers, and no publicly reported civil lawsuit filed by Bundrent's family. Body-worn camera footage from the incident was later released by Houston Police.
