On 07/20/2023, Austin Police Department officers responded to an apartment complex in the 2300 block of Douglas Street after a 911 caller reported that a man armed with a knife was chasing a woman. Officers located the woman, who said James Woodrome had threatened her with a knife. Officers then encountered Woodrome holding a knife in a nearby courtyard.
Officers repeatedly ordered Woodrome to drop the knife. Officer John Ricker and Probationary Officer Arlene Lozano each deployed a Taser, but Woodrome continued holding the knife and advanced. According to police, Woodrome also stated that he wanted officers to shoot him. Officer Adam Reinhart fired his service weapon, striking Woodrome. Officers rendered medical aid until Austin-Travis County EMS arrived, but Woodrome was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Austin Police Department identified Officer Adam Reinhart as the officer who fired the fatal shots. Officers John Ricker and Arlene Lozano were identified as deploying Tasers. The officers were placed on administrative leave while the criminal and administrative investigations proceeded, consistent with department policy.
