Event : Killed by police following vehicle pursuit after reported aggravated robbery

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/13/2024, League City police responded to a reported aggravated robbery involving an armed man. Officers identified 34-year-old Jonathan Velasquez as the robbery suspect and attempted to stop his vehicle. Velasquez continued driving away while League City officers pursued north toward Houston. The reason for the pursuit was the reported aggravated robbery.
The pursuit entered southeast Houston, where Houston Police Department officers assisted. Near Alconbury Lane and Scott Street, Velasquez lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a ditch. After the crash, he exited the vehicle carrying a handgun. According to investigators, officers repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon, but he continued holding the gun. Officers then fired, striking Velasquez. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Unit and the Houston Police Department Special Investigations Unit investigated the shooting. The Harris County District Attorney's Office was notified and conducted the customary review of the officers' use of deadly force. Body-camera and dash-camera footage were later released by the Houston Police Department as part of its Critical Incidents Briefing program.
A review of subsequent reporting through 2026 located no publicly reported civil lawsuit or settlement arising from the shooting, no criminal charges against the involved officers, and no publicly reported disciplinary action.
