OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/19/2021, Jordan Nelson, 33, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following an approximately two-hour standoff with the Nye County Sheriff’s Office at his residence on Dana Way in Pahrump. The police encounter began after deputies responded to reports of gunfire at Nelson’s former girlfriend’s residence in the area of Irene and Leslie streets.

The Nye County Sheriff’s Office alleged that Nelson had fired multiple rounds at his former girlfriend’s house at approximately 3:30 p.m., narrowly missing people inside. Deputies subsequently went to Nelson’s residence on Dana Way. Police reported that Nelson fired at deputies when they arrived, with at least one round striking a police vehicle.

The sheriff’s office deployed its SWAT team and established a perimeter around the residence. David Boruchowitz acted as a negotiator and communicated with Nelson by telephone for approximately two hours while police attempted to persuade him to leave the house.

After the negotiations failed to produce a surrender, deputies deployed CS gas and entered the residence. They found Nelson suffering from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported by ambulance to Desert View Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police gunfire did not cause his death.

Nelson’s death later became the subject of wrongful-death litigation against Boruchowitz and former Nye County Sheriff Sharon Wehrly. A lawsuit filed by Nelson’s family alleged that Boruchowitz turned off his body-worn camera while negotiating with Nelson, taunted him and encouraged him to kill himself. Those assertions are allegations made in the civil complaint.

Nelson’s family subsequently continued publicly challenging the circumstances of his death. Nye County government records document his mother stating that she believed Boruchowitz talked her son into suicide and questioning why body-camera footage had not been provided to the family’s attorneys.

OFFICER BACKGROUND:
David Boruchowitz was identified as the Nye County Sheriff’s Office negotiator who communicated with Nelson during the standoff. Nelson’s family later named Boruchowitz in wrongful-death litigation alleging misconduct during those negotiations, including deliberately disabling his body-worn camera and encouraging Nelson to kill himself.
