OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 04/11/2021, Emmanuel Ross, 22, of St. Louis, fatally shot himself as Jerseyville Police Department officers initiated a traffic stop on Spruce Street. Jerseyville police had been alerted to watch for a vehicle with Missouri license plates connected to a St. Louis homicide investigation.
At approximately 11 p.m., Jerseyville officers located the vehicle and initiated the traffic stop. As officers attempted to stop it, they heard a single gunshot from inside the passenger compartment.
Police subsequently found Ross suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was airlifted to a St. Louis-area hospital and pronounced dead.
The investigation was subsequently turned over to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department because Ross had been under investigation in connection with a homicide committed in St. Louis earlier that day.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
No Jerseyville police officer fired the shot that killed Ross. The officers involved in the traffic stop were not publicly identified in the reporting located.
