On April 20, 2021, Columbus Police Officer Nicholas Reardon responded to a report of a fight outside a residence on the 3100 block of Legion Lane in Columbus, Ohio. Upon arriving at the scene, Reardon observed 16-year-old Ma'Khia Bryant holding a knife and charging toward another individual.

Reardon fired four shots, striking and killing Bryant. The incident was captured on body camera footage, which showed the moments leading up to and including the shooting.

On 04/20/2021, Narcisse Antoine, 40, died from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound after Boynton Beach police located his vehicle and attempted a traffic stop on northbound Interstate 95 north of Gateway Boulevard. Police were searching for Antoine in connection with a fatal domestic shooting earlier that morning.

At approximately 1:30 a.m., Boynton Beach police responded to the Hampton Inn on Gateway Boulevard and found a 32-year-old woman shot to death inside a vehicle in the parking lot. An unharmed two-year-old child was asleep inside the vehicle. Witnesses told police that Antoine had left the scene.

Police subsequently located Antoine's vehicle on northbound I-95 and attempted to stop it. When officers made contact, they found Antoine dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police did not shoot him.

OFFICER BACKGROUND:

On 04/19/2021, 19-year-old Gwendolyn “Gwen” Doner was critically injured when a Chevrolet Avalanche fleeing Unified Police Department officers traveled the wrong way on Interstate 215 and crashed head-on into the Ford Taurus she was driving near the I-215/I-15 interchange in Murray, Utah. Doner died at Intermountain Medical Center less than two days later.

The fatal sequence began when oh mandrove to the Unified Police Department's Cottonwood Heights substation at 7840 South 2700 East and rammed a marked police patrol vehicle parked there. He then drove away and Unified Police officers pursued him.

The flea driver entered Interstate 215 at 6200 South traveling the wrong direction. Unified Police terminated the pursuit because the fleeing vehicle was driving against freeway traffic. Law enforcement attempted to shut down the immediate area, but the vehicle continued traveling the wrong way for approximately six miles.

Doner was driving her Ford Taurus with her boyfriend, Tyler Shoemaker, as a passenger. They were returning from giving a friend a ride home. Their dog, Blue, was also riding in the vehicle.

Near the interchange from I-215 to southbound I-15, the vehicle under pursuit crashed head-on into Doner's Taurus. The driver. subsequently continued and collided head-on with a Jeep Cherokee. Doner sustained critical injuries, Shoemaker was seriously injured, and another person involved in the subsequent collision was also injured.

The driver got out of his vehicle after the collisions and ran from the scene before officers apprehended him. According to charging documents, the driver later told police that he had deliberately driven the wrong way because he was attempting to kill himself.

Doner was transported to Intermountain Medical Center and died less than two days after the collision. Subsequent litigation by her parents alleged that Doner survived the crash but suffered a fatal anoxic brain injury after emergency medical providers administered an excessive dose of ketamine. Edgar Luis Tirado was involved in a string of robberies and a carjacking. While fleeing from the scene, he allegedly pointed a replica handgun at police officers as he ran across the interstate. Officers shot and killed him.

On 04/19/2021, Dothan police shot and killed 39 year old Doward Sylleen Baker following a traffic stop near Trim Street and Third Avenue. An officer stopped Baker’s vehicle for not displaying a license plate. During the stop, police stated the officer observed a firearm inside the vehicle. Baker drove a short distance and stopped again nearby.
Police reported that Baker exited the vehicle while holding a gun. An officer deployed a Taser. During the encounter, police stated that Baker fired a shot that struck an officer in the leg. A second officer arrived, and officers opened fire, killing Baker at the scene.
The Houston County District Attorney reviewed the shooting and ruled the use of deadly force justified. Baker’s family later filed a civil lawsuit against the City of Dothan and the police department seeking damages. The civil case was pending at the time of later reporting.

On 04/19/2021, Fountain police officers and Colorado State Patrol troopers shot and killed 38 year old Robert Paul Garcia following a high-speed pursuit on Interstate 25 in Colorado Springs. Law enforcement responded earlier to a reported attempted robbery at a Dairy Queen in Pueblo West. A short time later, officers spotted a pickup truck linked to the incident traveling northbound on I-25 at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.
The truck briefly pulled over, and a passenger exited. The driver then accelerated and continued northbound on I-25. South of North Academy Boulevard, a trooper used a patrol vehicle to force the truck off the roadway. During the stop that followed, officers opened fire. Garcia, who was driving the truck, was struck by gunfire and killed at the scene.
The El Paso County District Attorney reviewed the shooting and ruled the use of deadly force justified. No officers were charged.

NARRATIVE:
On 04/18/2021, 62-year-old professional photographer David Kawashima of Orange was killed when a vehicle fleeing a Tustin Police Department officer traveled the wrong way on Jamboree Road and crashed head-on into his vehicle near Warner Avenue in Irvine, California. Kawashima was an uninvolved motorist who encountered the pursuit while driving to a photography assignment for the City of Irvine.

At approximately 8:45 a.m., Tustin police were called to the District at Tustin Legacy shopping center after employees reported a driver who appeared to be passed out in the In-N-Out Burger drive-thru.

The subsequent criminal case established that at approximately 9:00 a.m., a police officer arrived and parked behind this vehicle. The driver backed up and drove away, and the officer followed. The vehicle drove through a rear alley of the shopping center, traveled the wrong direction through a gas station, ran a stop sign and a red traffic signal, crossed double-yellow lines and entered the wrong side of a major roadway.

The vehicle continued north in the southbound lanes of Jamboree Road at approximately 55 to 60 mph. According to evidence subsequently summarized by the California Court of Appeal, he narrowly avoided approximately seven vehicles traveling toward him before reaching Kawashima's vehicle.

After traveling approximately 300 yards against traffic, the vehicle crashed head-on into Kawashima's vehicle on Jamboree Road near Warner Avenue. Kawashima was alone in his vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fleeing driver and his female passenger survived the collision and were hospitalized.

On 04/18/2021, an incident involving five people being shot and wounded occurred in Detroit, Michigan. On 04/18/2021, officers from the Burnsville Police Department found Bradley Olsen driving a vehicle with stolen plates when he subsequently crashed. Officers soon received a report that he was involved in a carjacking. Police pursued the carjacked vehicle, and Olsen allegedly fired at pursuing officers before crashing the vehicle and continuing to shoot at police, who then shot and killed him. On 04/18/2021, Detroit Police Department officers were investigating a shooting involving five victims and a related fatal crash near West McNichols Road and Ward Avenue. The investigation continued after midnight into April 19. At approximately 2:38 a.m., a 27-year-old man driving a 2019 GMC Yukon entered the police-controlled crime scene. Police alleged that he fired a shot toward an officer, striking a police vehicle, and struck two parked police vehicles as he drove away.

Detroit police pursued the Yukon across the city. Police reported speeds exceeding 100 mph as the pursuit traveled through Detroit’s west side, downtown, onto a freeway and eventually toward the east side.

After the Yukon became damaged, the man stopped in a parking lot, got out and exchanged gunfire with officers, according to police. He then ran from the area while police pursued him on foot and in vehicles.

Police alleged that when an officer caught up with him less than half a mile away, the man pointed a handgun toward the officer. Police again opened fire, striking him. Officers provided emergency medical aid and transported him to a hospital, where he died. A .40-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun was recovered.

Detroit police released dash-camera video showing portions of the encounter and gunfire. Chief James Craig also disclosed that police had spoken with the man’s family, who said he had been deeply distressed by the shooting death of a 21-year-old friend the previous day and another recent death in his family.

On 04/18/2021, DeQuan Cortez Glenn, 24, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after fleeing a Douglasville Police Department driver's-license and safety checkpoint on Chapel Hill Road near Interstate 20. The checkpoint was operating at approximately 2:07 a.m. when officers saw a vehicle they believed was attempting to avoid police.

Douglasville officers pursued the vehicle until it stopped and Glenn ran. Police established a perimeter and requested assistance from the Austell Police Department K-9 Unit.

Austell Police Officer Edward Reeves and K-9 Jerry Lee tracked Glenn. When they located him, gunfire was exchanged. Police alleged that Glenn shot Jerry Lee in the front leg. Reeves returned fire. Reeves then removed his wounded K-9 from the area.

Police subsequently located Glenn dead. Although an officer had fired during the encounter, the GBI reported that preliminary autopsy findings established Glenn's fatal injury as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation conducted the independent investigation. Its statewide 2021 police-shooting index records the April 18 Douglasville incident, Glenn's identity and the involvement of the Douglasville Police Department.

On April 17, 2021, around 3:30 a.m., Spokane Police responded to a report of a suspected car prowling in the 500 block of South Cannon Street. A victim reported that Vadim A. Grishchuk had broken into his vehicle and pointed a gun at him when confronted. When officers arrived, Grishchuk pointed the gun at police after being given commands and allegedly fired a shot. On 04/17/2021, Weld County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed 60 year old Smoky Lynn Crockett outside a residence on Casler Avenue in Fort Lupton. Deputies responded to a call reporting that a man was armed with a gun, preventing another individual from leaving the home, and making threats to kill them.
When deputies arrived, they located Crockett outside the residence while he was armed. Deputies engaged with him for several minutes. During the encounter that followed, deputies opened fire and killed Crockett at the scene.

On April 16, 2021, Albuquerque Police Department officers responded to a domestic dispute at a residence on Coyote Canyon Place NW in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Juan James Cordova, 51, was reportedly armed and had fired a shot inside the house and was in mental health crisis per his girlfriend. Officers spent approximately an hour attempting to negotiate with Cordova, urging him to surrender peacefully.

Despite negotiations, Cordova remained uncooperative, holding a firearm and making statements suggesting he intended to provoke a lethal response from the police. At one point, he fired a round, which passed through a window and struck a neighbor's house. When Cordova allegedly pointed his firearm at the officers, Officer Bryce Willsey opened fire and killed him.

On 04/16/2021, 35-year-old Lafe Benjamin Parsley of Linden was killed when the 2003 Toyota Camry he was driving left Marengo County Road 54 and struck a tree approximately three miles south of Demopolis, Alabama.

The crash occurred late Friday night, shortly before 11:00 p.m., as Parsley traveled on Marengo County Road 54 just south of the Demopolis city limits.

According to Alabama Law Enforcement Agency State Troopers, Parsley's Toyota Camry left the roadway and struck a tree. The collision caused fatal injuries, and Parsley was pronounced dead at the scene.

On 04/15/2021, an unidentified man was killed after running from a U.S. Border Patrol traffic stop and attempting to cross U.S. Highway 281 near San Manuel in Hidalgo County, Texas. He was struck by one vehicle and then run over by a second vehicle.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:13 p.m. on U.S. Highway 281 near mile marker 754. A Border Patrol agent had stopped a silver Ford Taurus approximately 40 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border. According to Customs and Border Protection, the Taurus yielded approximately 30 seconds after the agent initiated the stop.

After the Taurus stopped, four occupants ran from the vehicle. The Border Patrol agent approached the car and detained its driver, who authorities identified as a 16-year-old U.S. citizen.

On 04/15/2021 at approximately 3:45 a.m., Roger Fuentes, 50, was lying in the roadway at Colorado Street and West 13th Street, immediately west of the Texas State Capitol in downtown Austin. Fuentes' last known address was in Taft, Texas. A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper was patrolling the Capitol area northbound on Colorado Street and turned left onto West 13th Street, striking and running over Fuentes. DPS said it was not known why Fuentes was lying in the roadway.
