Deputies from the Citrus County Sheriff's Office responded around 9:45 a.m. to multiple 911 calls reporting a man, Steven Verdone, behaving erratically and running in and out of traffic near the Marathon Gas station at 6241 W Cardinal Street in Homosassa, Florida. Verdone was yelling at people near the locked entrance to the convenience store and attempted to enter before the deputy's arrival. As the deputy exited his cruiser, Verdone approached while armed with a knife. The deputy shot and killed Verdone during the encounter.

On January 22, 2021, around 9:06 a.m., deputies from the Racine County Sheriff's Office responded to a welfare check request for a residence in the Village of Rochester. The request came from a family member who lived outside of Wisconsin. The home was shared by 30-year-old Matthew T. Vinz and his parents, Terrence G. Vinz, 65, and Debra A. Meagher, 62. Deputies entered the home and began searching for the occupants. Moments later, a gunshot was heard near the deputies. Upon investigation, Matthew Vinz was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The bodies of his parents were later found in the garage.

The driver of a Chevrolet Malibu with gold-colored rims fled a high-speed traffic stop. Officers escalated the chase in Houston, lasting approximately 10 minutes. The chase ended when the driver lost control, crashing into a tree near the 1900 block of Evergreen Drive. The vehicle burst into flames, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

On 01/21/2021, 20-year-old bystander Omar Harun was killed following a police pursuit in Aston, Birmingham that crashed into his vehicle. West Midlands Police attempted to stop a black BMW that did not stop. Police escalated a chase at speeds up to 90 mph in a 30 mph zone. Police allege that they called off the chase just before the vehicle ran a red light and collided with a red Toyota Aygo. The crash caused the Aygo to flip onto its roof, ejecting passenger Omar Harun, who died at the scene. The Aygo’s driver and another passenger in the BMW sustained serious injuries. Marin fled but was arrested hiding nearby. He was charged with multiple counts including causing death by dangerous driving.

On 01/21/2021, New York City police officers were stopped at a traffic light in the Wakefield section of the Bronx when they heard a disturbance and calls for help from nearby. Officers exited their vehicle and observed a woman running along the street, followed by David McFarlane, who police said was holding a knife. Officers ordered him to drop the knife. According to police, McFarlane turned toward the officers while still holding the knife, and officers opened fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting was placed under investigation. Reporting later indicated McFarlane had a history of mental health issues, according to family members.

On 01/21/2021, San Jose police shot and killed David Tovar Jr. at an apartment complex on La Pala Drive. Police said officers were attempting to locate Tovar in connection with a homicide and two other shootings in South Santa Clara County. According to authorities, officers encountered Tovar on a second floor landing while they were positioned in a ground level courtyard. Police reported that Tovar was unarmed and that officers believed he was reaching into his waistband when they opened fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting was placed under investigation, and no criminal charges against officers were announced at the time of reporting.

On January 21, 2021, at approximately 10:20 p.m., Grayson County Sheriff's Office deputies Andy Vincent and Jason Luedke responded to a residence at 504 North Main Street in Caneyville, Kentucky, following a tip regarding the whereabouts of 34-year-old Brian Richard Abbott, who was wanted for absconding post-incarceration supervision. Police entered the home and alleged they encountered him with knives. Deputy Vincent fired and struck Abbott three times. Abbott was pronounced dead in his home by the Grayson County Deputy Coroner. Around 2 a.m., Fort Myers Police Department officers responded to multiple reports of gunshots at 2102 Dora Street in Fort Myers, Florida. Upon arrival, they were met with gunfire from an individual who then barricaded himself inside the residence for over 12 hours. At approximately 10 a.m., two people fled the home without injury. Officers deployed less-lethal weapons and gas before breaching the residence. Inside, they discovered a semi-automatic rifle, a handgun, and the individual dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On January 21, 2021, around 1 a.m., College Station Police Department officers and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by 33-year-old Ryan Daniel Stallings. Investigators suspected Stallings was transporting large quantities of drugs. During the stop, Stallings allegedly retrieved a handgun from the center console of his vehicle. In response, Officer Matthew Newton, an eight-year veteran of the department, discharged his weapon, fatally striking Stallings. The incident occurred near the intersection of TX-6 Frontage Road and University Drive E in College Station, Texas.

On January 20, 2021, a male driver was killed following a police pursuit in Fontana, California. Fontana Police Department officers attempted to stop a vehicle in connection with an ongoing investigation. The driver did not stop. Police escalated a pursuit through Rialto and Rancho Cucamonga until the vehicle exited the 210 Freeway at Beech Avenue and collided with another vehicle occupied by a man and a woman. On 01/20/2021, Pima County sheriff’s deputies responded around 3:30 a.m. to reports of a man attempting to break into vehicles in the north Tucson area. Deputies later identified Bradley Alexander Lewis in connection with the report. On January 18, 2021, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Toledo Police officers approached Christopher A. Harris, 27, outside a residence in the 2200 block of Fulton Street. Mr. Harris was a man in the vandalism and arson of the Rosary Cathedral earlier that day. Upon noticing the officers, he held a firearm and retreated into his home. Police initiated a standoff. Officers deployed tear gas into the residence. Subsequently, Mr. Harris exited the house with two firearms and fired multiple shots, fatally striking Officer Brandon Stalker, 24, in the head. In response, officers returned fire, killing Mr. Harris.

On 01/17/2021, Avondale police attempted to take Daniel Canales Jr. into custody near 9890 Estrella Parkway in Goodyear. Police said officers were following a vehicle they believed had been stolen and tracked it to a Walgreens near Estrella Mountain Ranch. When officers attempted to arrest Canales Jr., a confrontation occurred. Officers opened fire and shot him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office later cleared the officers of wrongdoing.

On January 17, 2021, Grant County Sheriff's Deputy Matthew Sneed responded to a domestic situation involving a stabbing at a residence in the 3200 block of South Central Avenue in Marion, Indiana. As Deputy Sneed approached the house, Daniel Young, 25, allegedly drove a Honda Civic toward the deputy. In response, Sneed jumped onto the hood of the moving vehicle and shot and killed Young through the windshield of the car.

Deputies were called around 10:15 a.m. to a shooting in the parking lot of the Tuckahoe Motorcycle Club. On January 17, 2021, at approximately 1:30 a.m., a Warsaw Police Department officer attempted to stop a vehicle on US-42 in Warsaw, Kentucky, for speeding. The driver, 31-year-old Josh Hodges of Florence, Kentucky, did not stop. Police escalated a chase during which he lost control of the vehicle while navigating a curve and collided with a concrete wall. A passenger, 54-year-old Shanda Marie Withrow of Hamilton, Ohio, was pronounced dead at the crash site. Hodges and another passenger sustained injuries and were sent to a hospital.

On January 17, 2021, at approximately 3:30 a.m., Lawton police officers conducted a compliance check at the Lavish Lounge, where 24-year-old Zonterius "Zon" Johnson was celebrating his birthday. During the check, shots were fired from outside the club, with at least one bullet striking the building. Officers observed Johnson exchanging gunfire with an unidentified individual. Johnson fled the scene on foot. Officer Nathan Ronan pursued Johnson into a dark alley. Johnson allegedly produced a firearm. Officer Ronan opened fire, striking Johnson. Johnson was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) conducted an investigation into the incident. The Comanche County District Attorney's Office reviewed the findings and determined that Officer Ronan's actions were justified. Body camera footage from the incident was released to the public.

Just after midnight on January 16, 2021, Kent Police officers responded to a report of a robbery involving a firearm at the East Hill Market. The store clerk reported that an individual had been loitering before approaching the counter, pulling out a gun, and demanding money before leaving. Officers noted the description of the individual matched one from an earlier robbery at a nearby convenience store. A responding officer observed a vehicle rapidly leaving a nearby parking lot. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, initiating a pursuit. During the chase, the vehicle veered off the road at high speed and collided with a tree, resulting in the driver's death.

On January 15, 2021, a California Highway Patrol officer attempted to stop a speeding vehicle on the 405 Freeway. The driver refused to stop. Neighbors in the area were evacuated as deputies established a perimeter. Police said the man was hiding inside a shed on the property and was holding a firearm. On January 15, 2021, El Paso Police Department officers responded to reports of a man firing a gun near Interstate 10 and along Thunderstorm Drive. Upon arrival, officers encountered 27-year-old Jean Paul Stanley, who was reportedly intoxicated and armed with a rifle. Stanley allegedly pointed the rifle at the officers, prompting them to open fire, resulting in his death. Prior to the confrontation, Stanley had informed police that he was suicidal.

On January 14, 2021, a man was killed in a fiery crash on the 405 Freeway near Roscoe Boulevard in Van Nuys during a police chase. The California Highway Patrol attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver did not stop. The pursuit ended when the car crashed and caught fire. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

On January 14, 2021, at around 3:15 p.m., the Brooklyn Park Police Department responded to reports of a man walking through yards in the 7500 block of 83rd Avenue. Initially, a caller reported that this man had broken into his home but then fled. Upon arriving at that location, officers were redirected by another family who said the same man had just entered their home. Several children managed to escape, but the man found a 7-year-old boy hiding in a closet and refused to release him. The man claimed he was armed with multiple guns and would not surrender. After negotiations, the standoff ended around 10:30 p.m. when the man took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot.

Police arrived at a residence to serve warrants on Jeffrey D. Kite for violating a protective order. Kite, who lived at the residence, refused to come out of the home. Police subsequently obtained a search warrant to enter the home and additional arrest warrants for stalking and violation of a protective order. About 9 p.m., Kite stopped communicating with them. Around 3 a.m., officers entered the home and found him hiding in a storage area. Police allege that Kite produced a gun and fired at the officers, who shot and killed him.

On December 22, 2020, Trooper Christopher Baldner stopped an SUV driven by Tristan Goods for speeding on the New York State Thruway in Ulster County. During the traffic stop, Baldner allegedly sprayed pepper spray into the vehicle, prompting Goods to drive away. Police escalated a chase on the Thruway at high speed. Baldner rammed the family’s SUV twice with his patrol vehicle, causing it to overturn several times. Eleven-year-old passenger Monica Goods was ejected from the vehicle and killed. Her parents and sister were injured. Baldner was later charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, and reckless endangerment for his actions during the pursuit.
