REASON FOR CHASE: Passenger killed after Wilbraham police attempted to stop the vehicle driven by Kevin Servantez. Servantez continued driving and was subsequently charged with refusal to stop for police, speeding, OUI, negligent operation and motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation.

NARRATIVE:
On 01/23/2022, 43-year-old Michael James Edgett of Hampden was killed when the vehicle in which he was a passenger crashed near 967 Main Street in Wilbraham after police attempted to stop the driver. The fatal crash occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m.

Edgett was riding with Servantez of Hampden when Wilbraham police escalated a chase.

The vehicle crashed near 967 Main Street in Wilbraham. Edgett suffered critical injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Servantez survived and was hospitalized with injuries described as not life-threatening.

Edgett graduated from Cathedral High School, where he played varsity soccer and hockey, and later worked for MassMutual as a system support specialist. He continued playing hockey in a Wednesday-night men's league and enjoyed construction and renovation projects and spending time at his family's camp, Lil' Acres, in Conway. He was the father of two daughters, Lyndsey and Kylie.

The Wilbraham Police Department did not publicly identify the officer or officers who attempted to stop Servantez.
