REASON FOR CHASE: A Deschutes County sheriff's deputy observed Peaslee driving approximately 90 to 100 mph and repeatedly crossing the center line into oncoming traffic. The deputy suspected that Peaslee was driving under the influence and activated the patrol vehicle's emergency lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop.

NARRATIVE:
On 01/31/2022, 50-year-old Lisa Marie Peaslee of Bend was killed when her Toyota Scion crashed during a Deschutes County Sheriff's Office pursuit on Johnson Ranch Road north of Alfalfa in Deschutes County.

At approximately 7 p.m., a Deschutes County sheriff's deputy observed Peaslee driving approximately 90 to 100 mph on Johnson Ranch Road. The deputy also reported seeing Peaslee repeatedly weave across the center line, including into the path of oncoming traffic. Suspecting that Peaslee was driving under the influence, the deputy activated the patrol vehicle's emergency lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop.

Peaslee continued driving and the deputy pursued her. An area resident traveling south on Johnson Ranch Road with her husband subsequently told local news that they saw the approaching police lights, pulled over and watched Peaslee's vehicle speed past them followed by the sheriff's patrol vehicle.

During the pursuit, Peaslee's Toyota crossed the southbound lane approximately one-half mile south of Stearns Road and struck a rock embankment along the southbound shoulder. The vehicle rolled and came to rest in the roadway. Peaslee was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators reported that speed and alcohol appeared to be contributing factors and stated that an open alcohol container was found at the crash scene.

Oregon State Police investigated the fatal collision. Bend Police Department collision-reconstruction personnel also participated in the investigation. Johnson Ranch Road remained closed for approximately seven hours while investigators processed the scene.

The Deschutes County District Attorney's Office separately reviewed the deputy's actions. District Attorney John Hummel concluded that the deputy had not engaged in misconduct and stated that the deputy had acted appropriately in attempting to stop Peaslee and pursuing her. The deputy was placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation was conducted.

Peaslee was formerly of Mounds View, Minnesota. She later moved to Miami, Florida, where she met her longtime partner, Ralf Dilzer, and the couple subsequently moved to Bend. She was survived by Dilzer, her mother Shirley Peaslee, her sister Kim Knickerbocker and other relatives. A celebration of her life was held in Mounds View in March 2022.

OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office did not publicly identify the deputy who initiated and participated in the pursuit. The Deschutes County District Attorney subsequently reviewed the deputy's actions and found no misconduct.
