OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

REASON FOR CHASE: Monroe County sheriff's deputies attempted to stop the Dodge Charger after a deputy clocked it traveling 102 mph northbound on Interstate 75 near mile marker 189.
.
NARRATIVE:
On 02/06/2022, 18-year-old Jarvis Redding was one of four young men killed when a Dodge Charger Scat Pack crashed into trees and caught fire during a Monroe County Sheriff's Office pursuit on Interstate 75 north of Forsyth. The other people killed were Oman Ellis, G'Nai Foster and Tyron Barrett.
.
At approximately 12:15 a.m., a Monroe County sheriff's deputy clocked the Charger traveling northbound at 102 mph near mile marker 189. As the deputy entered the highway to catch the vehicle, the Charger accelerated to approximately 137 mph.
.
The deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the Charger continued north. A second deputy positioned farther north clocked the vehicle traveling approximately 169 mph. Deputies subsequently lost sight of the Charger.
.
Approximately five minutes later, a passing motorist found one of the surviving occupants on the Exit 198 ramp and discovered the Charger burning in the woods near the High Falls Road exit. The vehicle had traveled up the exit ramp, left the roadway and crashed into trees.
.
Six people had been inside the Charger. Monroe County and Butts County deputies attempted to rescue the occupants and extinguish the fire. Deputies removed two men before smoke and flames prevented them from reaching the remaining occupants. Both survivors were transported to Navicent Health in Macon. Redding and three other occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.
.
Authorities reported recovering three guns and 17 credit cards from the wreckage. Available reporting did not establish that deputies knew about those items before the pursuit or that they formed any part of the reason for the attempted traffic stop.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office did not publicly identify the deputies who attempted the traffic stop and pursuit.
