REASON FOR CHASE: Wood River police pursued Fitzgerald after locating the red Dodge Challenger he was driving, which police believed had been involved in a shooting earlier that evening near the 600 block of Vine Street in Greenville.

NARRATIVE:
On 02/10/2022, 25-year-old Kiondre L. Fitzgerald of Greenville was killed when the red Dodge Challenger he was driving left Illinois Route 203 and overturned during a multi-agency police pursuit in Madison County.

Earlier that evening, police received information that a red Dodge Challenger was believed to have been involved in a shooting near the 600 block of Vine Street in Greenville. That shooting was separate from another shooting in Greenville that evening in which 37-year-old Laquita M. Sullivan was killed.

At approximately 9:06 p.m., Wood River police located a red Dodge Challenger matching the description of the vehicle associated with the Vine Street shooting. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but Fitzgerald continued driving and a pursuit involving multiple law-enforcement agencies followed.

The pursuit continued onto Illinois Route 203. Near the entrance to Eagle Park, Fitzgerald lost control of the Challenger. The vehicle left the roadway and overturned.

Fitzgerald and his passenger, 23-year-old Quincy L. McElmurry of Anna, Illinois, were transported to an area hospital. Fitzgerald died from his injuries. McElmurry survived.

Public reporting identifies Wood River Police Department as the agency that attempted the initial stop but describes the subsequent pursuit as involving multiple law-enforcement agencies without identifying all participating departments.
