.
NARRATIVE:
On 02/15/2022, an unidentified passenger was one of three people killed when a stolen Chevrolet pickup carrying seven people crashed during a Texas Department of Public Safety pursuit on U.S. Highway 57 approximately four miles east of La Pryor in Zavala County. Four additional passengers were seriously injured.
.
During the pre-dawn hours, Texas DPS troopers attempted to stop the Chevrolet pickup. Authorities confirmed that the truck had been reported stolen and said the circumstances were consistent with suspected migrant smuggling.

The driver continued on U.S. Highway 57 and DPS pursued the pickup. During the pursuit, the driver attempted to pass another vehicle by traveling onto the right shoulder. The driver lost control, crossed the highway and rolled the pickup multiple times.

Three passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. Four additional passengers suffered serious injuries and were transported to hospitals.
.
A Zavala County Sheriff's Office official said investigators believed the driver was among the three people killed, although authorities had not publicly established which of the deceased passengers had been driving.
.
The identities and ages of the three people killed were not publicly released in the records located. Later documentation concerning Operation Lone Star pursuit fatalities independently records the February 2022 Zavala County incident as a Texas DPS pursuit that killed three people and injured four.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The Texas Department of Public Safety did not publicly identify the trooper who initiated the traffic stop or the other troopers who participated in the pursuit.
