REASON FOR CHASE: Stolen vehicle; Taylorsville police attempted to stop Lettow after an officer spotted a Chrysler 200 reported stolen from North Salt Lake with a license plate reported stolen from West Valley City.

NARRATIVE:
On 03/17/2022, 40-year-old Jeremy Arthur Lettow of Salt Lake City was killed when the stolen Chrysler 200 he was driving crashed into a utility pole while Taylorsville police were attempting to stop and apprehend him.

At approximately 11:45 p.m. on March 16, a Taylorsville police officer spotted the Chrysler near 4200 South and Redwood Road. Before attempting the stop, police positioned additional officers and requested assistance from a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter.

When police attempted to stop the Chrysler, Lettow drove away. Officers did not conduct a conventional ground pursuit; instead, the DPS helicopter maintained aerial surveillance while officers positioned themselves ahead of the vehicle.

Near 4100 South and 1300 West, a Taylorsville officer deployed spike strips and punctured some of the Chrysler's tires. Police subsequently deployed a second set of spike strips. The vehicle continued through residential streets at a reduced speed.

At approximately 12:10 a.m. on March 17, Lettow was traveling north on Atherton Drive near 1200 West when he failed to negotiate a turn and crashed into a utility pole. Lettow and his male passenger were transported to a hospital with injuries. Several hours later, police were notified that Lettow had died.

Because the death followed police efforts to stop the vehicle, aerial surveillance and two police deployments of spike strips, the Officer-Involved Critical Incident protocol was activated and Unified Police Department investigated the crash.
