NARRATIVE:
On 03/23/2022, 38-year-old Erika Miller of Kansas City was killed while riding as a passenger in a zTrip vehicle that was struck by a Dodge Caliber being pursued by Kansas City police.

At approximately 5 p.m., Kansas City police officers spotted the Dodge near East 45th Street and Cleveland Avenue. The vehicle had been reported stolen during an armed carjacking six days earlier. Officers attempted to stop it and pursued when the driver continued away.

Police later alleged that during the pursuit, the vehicle drove at high speed, ran red lights and stop signs, traveled against traffic and nearly struck other vehicles.

Police deployed stop sticks on Truman Road, but driver avoided them and continued west. At Prospect Avenue, the Dodge collided with the zTrip vehicle carrying Miller.

Miller was ejected during the collision. She was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The zTrip driver survived. Jackson and his 15-year-old passenger were also hospitalized.

In 2023, after the case moved out of the juvenile system, Jackson County prosecutors charged him with involuntary manslaughter and felony eluding police in connection with Miller's death.
