NARRATIVE:
On 03/22/2022, 25-year-old Stephen Bradley Rainoff of Twentynine Palms was killed when his Yamaha motorcycle crashed during a high-speed pursuit by San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department deputies. Rainoff was a U.S. Marine assigned to the 1st Marine Division and stationed at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms.

At approximately 1:35 a.m., deputies observed Rainoff traveling on State Route 62 west of Lear Avenue at an estimated speed exceeding 100 mph. Deputies attempted to overtake the motorcycle.

Police reported that Rainoff turned north onto Lear Avenue through a red traffic signal and accelerated again to speeds estimated well over 100 mph. Deputies subsequently lost sight of the motorcycle.

While searching the area, deputies observed a large cloud of dust in the distance. They found the Yamaha overturned and located Rainoff in the open desert nearby, unconscious and not breathing. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The California Highway Patrol investigated the fatal crash. The San Bernardino County Coroner's Office subsequently identified Rainoff.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department did not publicly identify the deputy who initiated the pursuit or the other deputy/deputies who participated in the pursuit.
