.
NARRATIVE:
On 05/01/2022, 36-year-old Kyle Savage of Keokuk was critically injured when he was struck while on foot by a vehicle being pursued by the Keokuk Police Department. Savage was an uninvolved pedestrian and was not the person police were attempting to apprehend.
.
The collision occurred during the early morning hours while the driver was continuing away from Keokuk police. During the pursuit, the vehicle struck Savage. Emergency personnel transported Savage for medical treatment, and he was subsequently airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City because of the severity of his injuries.
.
Savage remained hospitalized for eight days. He died from his injuries on 05/09/2022. He was 36 years old.
.
Prosecutors subsequently charged the driver with homicide by vehicle and eluding resulting in death, along with multiple traffic offenses. He ultimately pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle by eluding.
.
In September 2022, the court sentenced the driver to an indeterminate term of up to 10 years in prison for Savage's death. His parole in an earlier criminal case was also revoked, and the sentences were ordered to run consecutively, resulting in a total indeterminate prison term of up to 20 years.
.
The available verified public reporting does not provide a reliable maximum pursuit speed, total distance or duration and does not clearly establish the original reason Keokuk police attempted the stop.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The Keokuk Police Department did not publicly identify the officer who initiated the pursuit or the other officers who participated in the verified sources located.
