NARRATIVE:
On 06/04/2022, an unidentified male passenger was killed when the silver vehicle in which he was riding crashed while fleeing from a Lawrence Police Department officer in Marion County.
.
At approximately 3 a.m., an officer in a fully marked Lawrence police vehicle observed someone in a black truck throwing objects toward a silver car near 8600 Pendleton Pike. Police said both vehicles were being driven aggressively toward each other.
.
The officer followed the vehicles. The silver car changed lanes several times before stopping sideways in front of the black vehicle. Police said the passenger opened his door and began to get out. Believing a potential carjacking or other felony was occurring, the officer activated the patrol vehicle's emergency lights.
.
The passenger returned to the silver vehicle and closed the door. The driver accelerated away eastbound in the 9100 block of East 42nd Street, and the officer followed.
.
The vehicle continued onto Shadeland Avenue. After crossing the railroad-track overpass in the 4200 block of North Shadeland Avenue, the driver lost control and crashed.
.
The passenger was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. The driver was trapped inside the wreckage and was transported to a hospital in critical condition. No second fatality was reported.
.
The Lawrence Police Fatal Crash Investigation Team investigated the collision. The available public records do not provide a reliable pursuit speed, total distance or duration.
.
Despite an extended search of subsequent news coverage, death notices, Indianapolis-area obituaries, funeral-home records and other indexed material, the deceased passenger's identity could not be reliably established.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The Lawrence Police Department did not publicly identify the officer who initiated the attempted stop and followed the vehicle in the sources located.
