OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

REASON FOR CHASE: Bystander killed during pursuit after NYPD officers attempted to stop a Honda HR-V near Ralph Avenue and Chauncey Street after observing a traffic violation and determining that its license plates did not match the vehicle. When officers approached, the driver accelerated away at high speed.
.
NARRATIVE:
On 06/25/2022, 67-year-old Lynn Christopher was killed when a Honda HR-V fleeing NYPD officers struck her as she crossed Ralph Avenue at Macon Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Her 8-year-old grandson, Jacob, was also struck and suffered catastrophic injuries.
.
At approximately 7:10 p.m., officers from the NYPD's 81st Precinct attempted to stop the Honda near Ralph Avenue and Chauncey Street after observing a traffic violation and determining that its license plates did not match the vehicle. When officers approached, the driver accelerated north on Ralph Avenue at high speed.
.
The Honda traveled approximately four blocks before crossing the double-yellow centerline into opposing traffic. The vehicle struck a bicyclist and continued toward Ralph Avenue and Macon Street.
.
Christopher was crossing Ralph Avenue with her 8-year-old grandson when the Honda struck them. Christopher died at the scene. Her grandson was critically injured and transported to Maimonides Medical Center. Three other people were injured during the driver's continued flight.
.
The Honda continued along Ralph Avenue, ran another red light, collided with another vehicle, struck another pedestrian and eventually crashed into a bodega. The occupants fled on foot.
.
Police subsequently identified the driver as 22-year-old Tyler Green. In October 2022, the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office charged Green with second-degree murder, manslaughter, assault and additional offenses arising from Christopher's death and the injuries to the other victims.
.
Christopher was a mother and grandmother who lived near the crash scene. Her grandchildren had traveled from Georgia to Brooklyn to spend the summer with her. Her family described her as their matriarch and said the children had spent the day in Downtown Brooklyn with their grandmother before the crash.
.
Christopher's grandson survived but suffered a catastrophic brain injury. Subsequent family updates report that he is quadriplegic, nonverbal, requires feeding through a tube and needs continuous care.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The NYPD sergeant and two officers involved in the attempted traffic stop were not publicly identified in the sources located.
