NARRATIVE:
On 09/16/2022, 40-year-old Derricus Demond Camp was killed when his Ford left Highway 27 and crashed near the top of Taylor’s Ridge during a police pursuit in Chattooga County.

At approximately 2 p.m., Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputy Villagomez stopped Camp near Silver Hill Road after allegedly clocking him at 83 mph in a 65-mph zone. Villagomez reported smelling marijuana and asked Camp to exit the vehicle. Camp drove away and Villagomez pursued him.

A Georgia State Patrol trooper traveling through the Gore community clocked Camp at 117 mph near the Summerville Motel. The trooper turned around and joined the pursuit.

Villagomez lost sight of the Ford as Camp traveled up Taylor’s Ridge. A motorist flagged the deputy down and reported seeing the Ford leave the roadway near the top of the ridge. Camp suffered fatal injuries. Georgia State Patrol investigated the crash.

OFFICER BACKGROUND:
Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputy Villagomez was identified as the deputy who initiated the traffic stop and pursuit. The Georgia State Patrol trooper who joined the pursuit was not publicly identified.
