NARRATIVE:
On 09/23/2022, one person was fatally injured when a vehicle fleeing East Ellijay police collided head-on with another vehicle on Highway 515 in East Ellijay.
.
East Ellijay Police Chief Larry Callahan said officers attempted to stop a vehicle containing people accused of shoplifting at the East Ellijay Walmart. When officers activated their emergency lights, the driver accelerated away and entered the southbound lanes while traveling north. Police alleged they discontinued the pursuit at that point.
.
The fleeing vehicle continued north in the southbound lanes until it struck another vehicle head-on and then hit a guardrail. Reports indicated the fleeing vehicle reached approximately 95 mph. Three medical helicopters were reportedly requested.
.
People in the fleeing vehicle suffered critical injuries, including at least one person whose injuries were described that day as life-threatening. Occupants of the uninvolved vehicle were also injured but were not initially considered critical. Georgia State Patrol's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team investigated.
.
A later local report confirms that one person died following the crash. I could not verify the decedent's identity, age, gender, or whether the person was driving or riding as a passenger.
