NARRATIVE:
On 11/11/2022, 15-year-old Cayden Blake Britt of Oneonta was killed when a pickup truck driven by a 17-year-old driver crashed on Alabama Highway 91 near County Road 549 in Cullman County. Fellow passengers Dailan Kameron Jennings, 16, and Evan Magana, 15, were also killed.

At approximately 1:30 a.m., Hanceville police had been notified about an erratic driver. Assistant Police Chief Adam Hadder said an officer believed he saw the reported vehicle and turned around to follow it. Hadder maintained that the officer never caught up with the pickup and that it was already out of sight before the officer completed the turn. ALEA's subsequent investigation nevertheless determined that Maldonado-Vasquez was attempting to elude the Hanceville officer when the crash occurred.

Maldonado-Vasquez lost control of the pickup on Alabama 91 approximately three miles east of Hanceville. The truck struck a guardrail and then a tree and caught fire. Maldonado-Vasquez was ejected and critically injured. Britt, Jennings and Magana died at the scene.

Later court records established that Maldonado-Vasquez was traveling at more than 100 mph while attempting to elude police.

Cayden was a sophomore at Susan Moore High School and played football, baseball and basketball. His family established the Cayden Britt Memorial Athletic Scholarship Fund in his memory.
