.
NARRATIVE:
On 11/25/2022, 26-year-old Kyreem Softleigh of Albany was killed when a vehicle driven by someone else crashed into the vehicle in which Softleigh was a passenger at Bradford and Ontario streets in Albany after the fleeing vehicle drove away from Albany police. Two other occupants of Softleigh's vehicle were injured.
.
At approximately 10:15 p.m., Albany police encountered a man asleep behind the wheel near Central Avenue and North Lake Avenue. Officers approached the vehicle and woke him. Police said he then drove away toward Bradford and Ontario streets. Contemporary local reporting explicitly described the sequence as a police chase that led to the fatal crash.
.
Later prosecution records provide an important detail omitted from the earliest reports: The fleeing vehicle reached approximately 80 mph while attempting to outrun police. At Bradford and Ontario streets, he drove through a stop sign and collided with the vehicle traveling south on Ontario Street in which Softleigh was riding.
.
Softleigh was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The two other people traveling with him were transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital with injuries. The fleeing driver survived the collision and ran from the crash scene before officers apprehended him.
