NARRATIVE:
On 12/17/2022, an unidentified 54-year-old Santa Cruz man was killed when the 2006 Harley-Davidson motorcycle he was riding crashed on Water Street in Santa Cruz during a California Highway Patrol pursuit.

The encounter began shortly before 2:00 a.m. CHP officers observed the motorcycle traveling at what they described as a high rate of speed and alleged that the rider failed to stop at a stop sign. Officers attempted an enforcement stop using the patrol vehicle's emergency lights and siren.

The motorcyclist continued driving and CHP pursued him. The pursuit was exceptionally brief: CHP said that less than one minute after officers attempted the stop, the motorcycle was traveling westbound on Water Street when the rider lost control.

Additional crash reporting places the collision at approximately 1:50 a.m. near Water Street and Branciforte Avenue and identifies the motorcycle as a 2006 Harley-Davidson.

The motorcycle struck a curb and crashed. CHP officers immediately attempted to provide medical assistance, but the rider died at the scene from his injuries.
