NARRATIVE:
On 12/30/2022, 84-year-old Lonell Jones of Jacksonville was killed when a vehicle being pursued by an Onslow County sheriff's deputy crashed into her vehicle at Ramsey Road and Kellum Loop Road in Onslow County, North Carolina.

An Onslow County Sheriff's Office DWI Unit deputy clocked the other vehicle traveling 77 mph in a 55 mph zone and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver continued driving while the deputy pursued him. During the pursuit, speeds exceeded 100 mph.

The pursuit continued to the intersection of Ramsey Road and Kellum Loop Road. Authorities said Frazier drove through the stop sign and struck the vehicle being driven by Jones. Jones was killed on impact. She was an uninvolved motorist and had no connection to the police encounter that preceded the collision.

Jones was described in subsequent court coverage as a grandmother. Her family lived close enough to the crash location that relatives reported hearing the emergency sirens without realizing at the time that their loved one had been killed.
