OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 05/07/2025, 43-year-old Rashad Green suffered catastrophic injuries after falling from a third-story apartment window while Los Angeles Police Department officers were attempting to arrest him in the 700 block of South Main Street in downtown Los Angeles. Green remained hospitalized on life support for 11 days and died from his injuries on 05/18/2025.
.
LAPD said Central Patrol Division officers arrived at approximately 11:00 a.m. looking for Green in connection with a robbery reported at the same location on 03/31/2025. Police said Green had been identified in a Central Area Crime Alert Bulletin.
.
Officers spoke with a woman at the entrance of an apartment and saw Green inside. Police alleged Green was holding a knife. Officers ordered him to drop it and warned that less-lethal force would be used. An officer then fired a TASER from the apartment doorway. LAPD said the TASER was ineffective and alleged that Green subsequently threw what appeared to be a glass ashtray toward officers.
.
Green fled toward a third-story window and attempted to escape police by lowering himself toward the ground using a rope. He fell approximately three stories to the pavement below.
Green suffered a severe head injury and was unconscious following the fall. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics transported him to a hospital, where he was placed on life support. He never recovered from his injuries and died on 05/18/2025, 11 days after the police chase.
.
LAPD subsequently classified Green's death as an in-custody death and assigned the case number NRF019-25. The department's Force Investigation Division investigated the death.
An LAPD officer deployed a TASER shortly before Green fled through the third-story window. LAPD said the TASER did not incapacitate him. Available information does not establish whether or not the electrical discharge itself caused Green to fall.
.
LAPD released a Critical Incident Community Briefing on 07/02/2025 containing body-worn-camera and other video from the incident. LAPD initially treated the incident as a Categorical Use of Force under case F019-25 but later declassified it and stated that it was no longer considered a Use of Force. The department nevertheless continues to list Green's death as an in-custody death, NRF019-25, and the video remains publicly available.
