REASON FOR CHASE: Another vehicle committed traffic violations, including speeding, running red lights and driving into opposing traffic.

On 03/13/2023, 56-year-old David Brian Ellis was critically injured when a fleeing Infiniti crashed into his Acura at Nostrand Avenue and Crown Street in Brooklyn following an attempted NYPD traffic stop.

Police had observed the Infiniti speeding, running multiple red lights and swerving into opposing traffic. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled. At Nostrand Avenue and Crown Street, the Infiniti ran a red light at approximately 70 mph in a 25-mph zone and T-boned Ellis's Acura.

Ellis was trapped inside his vehicle and emergency crews had to cut off the door to remove him. He was taken to Kings County Hospital with a fractured leg, fractured ribs and a lung contusion. He remained hospitalized for five days before dying from blunt-force trauma on 03/18/2023.

NYPD later claimed officers were not actively pursuing the Infiniti at the moment of impact. Surveillance video, however, showed an NYPD cruiser entering the intersection approximately five to six seconds after the crash.

The fleeing driver pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter on 05/15/2024 and was sentenced to three to nine years in prison on 07/02/2024.
