On January 22, 2025, law enforcement agencies, including the Yuma Police Department, Yuma County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Marshals Service, and U.S. Border Patrol, attempted to serve a warrant at a residence on the 10200 block of East 37th Street in Yuma, Arizona. McKinney initially appeared near the door but retreated inside, refusing commands to surrender. He later exited the residence armed with a rifle and fired multiple rounds at officers. Law enforcement opened fire, killing McKinney.
