Anderson was one of three Red Oak police officers responding to an apartment fire at Acorn Acres. The Iowa State Patrol reported that Anderson was driving north with emergency lights and siren activated when Redd entered the roadway and was struck by his police SUV. She died at the scene.

Anderson was 22 and had served with Red Oak police for approximately two years. He was placed on paid administrative leave while the Iowa State Patrol investigated the crash.
