OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/15/2022, 52-year-old Darren Wesley Shull was killed when Carbon County Sheriff's Sgt. Kelly Carrington struck him with a sheriff's patrol vehicle on U.S. Highway 212 near Roberts, Montana. Shull, a former firefighter-paramedic, had stopped to help motorcyclist Jesse Beck after Beck crashed. Carrington's vehicle struck and killed both men.

Carrington was responding to the reported motorcycle crash when he struck Shull and Beck, who were in the southbound lane of Highway 212. After striking the men, Carrington lost control of the patrol vehicle, which left the roadway and came to rest in a ditch. Both Shull and Beck were pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident was captured by two video recording devices. Carrington was placed on administrative leave while the Montana Highway Patrol and Montana Division of Criminal Investigation investigated. The Yellowstone County Sheriff's Office also participated in the outside investigation, and an independent coroner was brought in to avoid a conflict of interest.

A coroner's inquest was held in June 2023 to determine whether Carrington could face criminal charges for the deaths. An eight-person jury ultimately determined that Carrington should not face criminal charges.

OFFICER BACKGROUND:
Sgt. Kelly Carrington had 16 years of law-enforcement experience at the time of the crash, including 11 years with the Carbon County Sheriff's Office. He was placed on paid administrative leave following the deaths while the outside investigation was conducted.
