On December 25, 2024, at approximately 5:25 a.m., Juneau Police Department officers responded to reports of a woman threatening individuals with a hammer in the parking lot of the Mendenhall Valley Breeze-In convenience store.

Upon arrival, officers encountered 30-year-old Ashley Rae Johnston with an object alternately described as a hammer or a hatchet. An officer fired a taser. Police claim that she moved toward the officers and an officer opened fire, killing her.

Johnston had a history of mental health struggles, substance use issues, and periods of housing insecurity. Her mother, Terri Nierstheimer, revealed that Ashley had been living "in a very dark place" since 2011, following the deaths of close family members. She first experienced homelessness at the age of 12 and had been living on the streets much of her life since then.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the incident, and the findings will be reviewed by the State of Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions.

OOn 12/25/2024, officers responded to a report from David J. Malito at the Shell gas station, 401 S. Larkin Avenue, Joliet, Illinois. Believing he might be under the influence of an unknown substance, officers attempted to detain him. An altercation ensued, and he fell to the ground and was handcuffed. He lost consciousness. Officers administered Narcan. He was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

On December 24, 2024, at approximately 8: 30 p.m., an Arkansas State Police trooper attempted to stop a vehicle traveling at 98 mph on Interstate 40 near mile marker 61 in Johnson County. The driver, a 33-year-old male, provided false identification during the stop and then drove away. Police escalated a chase. The trooper employed a tactical vehicle intervention (TVI) maneuver to halt the fleeing vehicle causing the car to veer into a wooded area north of the interstate, collide with trees, and come to a stop. The driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Arkansas State Police are investigating the incident.

On December 24, 2024, at approximately 7: 00 p.m., Middletown Police officers responded to reports of two men fighting at an apartment on Park Lane in Middletown, Ohio. Upon arrival, officers announced their presence, and the door was opened by a male individual, later identified as 50-year-old Christopher Gorak, who was armed with a gun. An officer discharged their firearm, striking Gorak. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an investigation into the incident.

On December 24, 2024, at approximately 7: 00 p.m., officers from the Hughes Police Department and the St. Francis County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a woman causing a disturbance with a firearm outside the Hughes Church of God at 802 Main Street in Hughes, Arkansas. Upon arrival, a Hughes police officer encountered 26-year-old Allie Kundert near the intersection of Main and Benton Streets. During the encounter, the officer opened fire and killed Allie Kundert. The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division is investigating.
