On 12/30/2022, a 35-year-old man was struck and killed by an on-duty Houston Police Department sergeant driving a marked patrol vehicle on the East Freeway near Wayside Drive in Houston. The collision occurred at approximately 2 a.m.

The sergeant, assigned to HPD's Northeast Patrol Division, was traveling westbound while responding to a non-emergency call. Contemporary reporting said the patrol vehicle was not using emergency lights or sirens.

According to police, the sergeant struck something in the roadway with enough force to deploy the patrol vehicle's airbags. He stopped and got out to inspect the vehicle, at which point he discovered the man lying beside the patrol vehicle. Investigators believed the 35-year-old man had been walking in a moving lane of the freeway.

Houston Fire Department paramedics responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene. Police said the patrol vehicle appeared to have been the only vehicle that struck him.
