OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 11/20/2024, Tanja Foster was killed when NYPD Detective Nicholas Verderosa ran over her with an unmarked police vehicle on Pennsylvania Avenue between Livonia and Riverdale avenues in Brooklyn. Verderosa was assigned to the NYPD Brooklyn North Warrant Section and was driving an unmarked Toyota minivan.

The New York Attorney General's investigation determined that Foster had fallen into the roadway approximately 18 seconds before she was struck. Verderosa was traveling southbound on Pennsylvania Avenue. NYPD collision reconstruction calculated that his vehicle was traveling approximately 45.33 mph at impact in a posted 25-mph zone.

Verderosa struck Foster while she was lying in the roadway. Foster was transported to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The medical examiner determined that she died from blunt-impact injuries caused by the collision.

The New York Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation investigated Foster's death. After reviewing video evidence, collision reconstruction, witness information and other evidence, the Attorney General declined to seek criminal charges against Verderosa, concluding that prosecutors could not establish beyond a reasonable doubt that his conduct met the standard required for criminally negligent homicide.

Nicholas Verderosa was an NYPD detective assigned to the Brooklyn North Warrant Section at the time he killed Tanja Foster. He was driving an unmarked NYPD Toyota minivan. The New York Attorney General declined criminal prosecution following its investigation.
