On 10/07/2024, 31-year-old Tyrone Mason was killed when his Chevrolet Malibu crashed into a concrete barrier on Capital Boulevard in Raleigh during a pursuit initiated by North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Garrett Macario.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., Macario was conducting traffic enforcement on Capital Boulevard when he encountered Mason traveling at an alleged approximately 70 mph in a 40-mph zone. Macario activated his emergency equipment and pursued Mason.

Mason accelerated during the pursuit. Macario eventually deactivated his emergency lights and siren and abandoned the pursuit. Shortly afterward, Mason lost control and crashed into a concrete median barrier.

Macario arrived at the crash scene and called his supervisor, Sgt. Matthew Morrison. Recorded communications subsequently revealed Morrison asking whether Macario had radioed the pursuit. After learning that he had not, Morrison advised Macario not to tell responding Raleigh police that he had attempted to stop Mason and instead to present himself as having simply encountered the wreck.

Macario followed that advice. When a Raleigh officer directly asked whether Macario had been attempting to pull Mason over, Macario denied it and claimed he had come upon the wreck after seeing smoke and debris.

Macario also did not immediately render medical aid to Mason. Subsequent litigation by Mason's family alleged that Macario failed to check Mason's condition after arriving at the wreck.

Raleigh police subsequently told Mason's mother, Henrietta Mason, that her son had not been pursued by law enforcement before the fatal crash. Henrietta Mason disputed that account and continued investigating her son's death.

The State Bureau of Investigation eventually examined the circumstances surrounding the crash. Video and audio evidence established both Macario's pursuit and the subsequent conversation in which Morrison advised him not to disclose it to Raleigh police.

The revelations created severe credibility problems for both troopers. Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman dismissed approximately 180 DWI cases involving Macario and additional cases involving Morrison because prosecutors could no longer rely on their testimony. Freeman nevertheless concluded that the available evidence did not support criminal prosecution of either trooper.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol fired Garrett Macario and Matthew Morrison effective 06/16/2025.

Henrietta Mason subsequently filed a federal civil-rights/wrongful-death lawsuit against Macario on behalf of her son's estate. Attorneys representing the family included Ben Crump, Bakari Sellers and Sean Cecil. The lawsuit alleged that Macario initiated the pursuit, failed to render timely aid following the crash and concealed his involvement.

In July 2026, the parties reached a $200,000 settlement. The settlement provides $100,000 for the wrongful-death claim and $100,000 for costs associated with Mason's estate. The settlement was publicly reported on 08/19/2026.

Garrett L. Macario was the North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper who initiated the pursuit. Matthew L. Morrison was Macario's supervisor and advised him after the crash not to disclose the attempted traffic stop and pursuit to Raleigh police. The resulting credibility investigation caused prosecutors to dismiss scores of cases dependent upon their testimony. Both troopers were dismissed from the Highway Patrol effective 06/16/2025. Neither was criminally charged in connection with Mason's death or the subsequent false statements.
